Self-employed income protection

If you work for yourself, time away from work can affect personal income and the business. I help assess how long your resources would last and what cover may be appropriate.

Use insurable income rather than turnover

Insurers need evidence of earnings and may assess directors and sole traders differently. The benefit should fit the policy's income definition. Business overheads and personal living costs are separate needs, even when both come from the same business account.

A review around your existing protection

We establish what you already have, what you want a policy to do and the premium you can maintain. Existing employer benefits and policy conditions should be checked before suggesting changes. Where specialist advice or a referral is needed, that route is explained before you proceed.

What to prepare

  • Accounts and personal income
  • Essential household expenses
  • Savings buffer
  • Existing policies and business overheads

You do not need every document before saying hello. Start with a short outline; detailed or sensitive records should follow through an agreed secure route.

Before you proceed

A fall in sales alone is not normally an income-protection claim. Cover is based on incapacity under the policy definition.

Your questions, answered

Should I check existing cover before taking out another policy?

Yes. Bring the policy schedule and details of relevant employer benefits so the cover, term, exclusions and purpose can be understood. The review should consider what would happen to those benefits if your employment changed. Avoid cancelling existing cover before any replacement is confirmed and reviewed.

How do we decide what protection is intended to do?

Start with the people, commitments or business needs you want to protect. Then consider what money would be needed, for how long and what premiums can be maintained. Different policies respond to different events, so the purpose matters as much as the headline benefit.

Will a quotation confirm that I can claim in future?

No. Acceptance, policy terms and claims depend on the insurer’s requirements and the contract. Accurate answers are essential when applying, and medical information should use the agreed secure process. We discuss relevant limitations and any need for specialist advice before you proceed.

Your household buffer

If income stopped, what would need covering?

Set a scenario for a particular month after illness or injury stops work. Re-run it when sick pay or other reliable income changes.

The starting figures are editable examples. Your inputs stay on this page and are not sent or deliberately saved.

To work it through without the calculator: subtract continuing monthly income from essential spending, then divide available savings by any shortfall.

How this illustration works

This is a simple financial-buffer illustration, not an insurance benefit calculation. It assumes spending and continuing income stay constant, and ignores inflation, savings interest and unexpected costs. It does not assess policy eligibility, taxation or benefits. Check the actual sick-pay schedule and policy terms.

A clearer protection decision

Protect the household without confusing it with the business

A business bank balance can contain tax money, supplier payments and working capital. Before treating it as your emergency fund, identify what could genuinely support your household if you could not work.

Personal income

What earnings can the insurer assess?

  • Separate turnover, business profit and personal drawings.
  • Identify salary, dividends and other receipts.
  • Ask which evidence and accounting period will be used.
Household resilience

What would still need paying?

  • Build a personal essentials budget.
  • Ring-fence tax and business commitments.
  • Consider how seasonal or variable earnings affect the discussion.
Business continuity

What happens to the work?

  • List tasks only you can perform.
  • Consider cover, delegation and key client relationships.
  • Discuss business overheads separately from personal income protection.
Open the questions that matter

Prepare for the questions behind a variable income

Can I use my best trading month as the income figure?

Take the full trading picture to the adviser and insurer. Ask how they assess fluctuating income, recent changes, dividends and money earned while you are absent. Do not assume the amount withdrawn each month is the insurable amount.

Would a quiet trading period produce a claim?

A fall in orders or sales is different from being unable to work through illness or injury. Personal income protection is based on the policy’s incapacity conditions. Keep the business cash-flow plan as a separate exercise.

Your next conversation

Prepare accounts or tax records, recent trading information, personal outgoings and a separate list of business costs. Detailed financial records can follow through an agreed secure route.
