Mortgages for sports coaches and managers

Club employment, fixed-term appointments and independent coaching businesses each need a different explanation. I help coaches and managers prepare for a mortgage discussion.

Start with the employment or trading arrangement

A salaried role, consultancy contract and self-employed coaching business should not be treated as interchangeable. We review the contract, payment history and any business accounts. Performance-linked payments, notice terms and a move between clubs can be relevant. For joint applications, the household’s other income and commitments are considered alongside the sporting role.

If you also run a coaching business

Bring the accounts and explain who contracts with clients, how sessions are paid for and whether you have employees or premises. Turnover alone does not explain personal affordability.

How I approach the case

We begin with what you want to achieve, your timescale and any part of the case that needs explaining. I review the evidence and suitable lender routes, then explain the available options and their costs. A recommendation follows the individual assessment; an initial conversation does not commit you to an application.

Where legal, tax or other specialist advice is needed, we identify it early so the finance fits the wider transaction. Tell me about any change in employment, borrowing, deposit or property details before proceeding.

What to prepare

  • Employment, club or consultancy contract
  • Payslips or coaching accounts
  • Bonus terms and receipt history
  • Business liabilities and premises commitments
  • Household income and planned relocation

You do not need every document before saying hello. Start with a short outline; detailed or sensitive records should follow through an agreed secure route.

Before you proceed

Income acceptance, borrowing amount and term depend on the lender’s individual assessment. Future playing contracts or sporting earnings are not guaranteed. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.

Your questions, answered

Do you work with coaches as well as players?

Yes. The assessment follows the actual employment or business arrangement and the property being financed.

Can you also discuss finance for premises?

A separate commercial-finance conversation can cover premises, business trading and the proposed security.
