The situation
An overseas business is reviewing a potential UK acquisition and wants a local point of contact. The principal needs meetings coordinated, questions followed up and progress reported between time zones. Legal, tax, banking and commercial work are being handled by separate specialists.
What makes this more involved?
An attractive target can generate activity before anyone agrees who owns each decision. A timetable that depends on unconfirmed banking, financing or professional advice can create unnecessary pressure. Coordination must not be confused with specialist legal, tax or regulated investment advice.
How I would approach it
Define the assignment
Agree the principal’s objectives, decision-makers, reporting format and the limits of the consultancy engagement. Record what would make the project worth pursuing or stopping.
Build a practical work plan
Allocate legal, tax, finance, banking and operational questions to the appointed specialists. Track evidence requests, dependencies and dates in one action log.
Report decisions, not just meetings
Separate confirmed facts, open questions, assumptions and decisions needed from the principal. Escalate blockers early and keep a record of who approved each next step.
What could change the plan?
Can the consultant guarantee a bank account or funding?
No. Banks and lenders make their own decisions. The role is to coordinate information and expectations, not promise acceptance.
What if the proposed structure changes?
Revisit the workstreams and professional advice. Changing buyer, ownership or funding can affect previous assumptions and documents.
What this would establish
Produce a reviewable action plan and evidence trail so the principal can make informed decisions with the appointed specialists. This is an illustrative coordination brief, not a completed acquisition.
Does consultancy include legal, tax or regulated investment advice?
No. Those matters remain with appropriately qualified and appointed advisers.
