A valuable share award is not the same as money in your bank account. I help explain where your equity remuneration sits today, how it supports your mortgage plans and what still needs to happen.
One conversation to understand the property, the people and the plan.

For employees and executives whose pay includes restricted stock units, deferred shares or other equity awards, including people paid overseas.
Show what has been awarded, vested, sold and received without counting the same value twice.
Distinguish money for your deposit from income intended to support ongoing mortgage payments.
Allow for restrictions, changing share values and the time needed to receive usable funds.
Restricted stock units, or RSUs, commonly promise shares once specified conditions are met. An award can depend on continued employment, time or performance. Some arrangements settle in cash. HMRC stresses that the actual terms matter more than the scheme’s label.
Start with the award agreement. A dashboard value for unvested units does not establish an available deposit. Vested shares may still need to be sold, and a completed sale has its own settlement and withdrawal steps. Record the status of each award separately.
| Stage | Useful evidence | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Granted | Award agreement and vesting schedule | Which conditions remain outstanding? |
| Vested or delivered | Vesting statement and holding record | What do you own and can you sell it? |
| Sold | Trade confirmation and settlement record | What net proceeds will be available? |
| Cash received | Account statement and transfer trail | Is it accessible for this purchase? |

There are two mortgage questions: what supports the monthly payments, and what funds completion? A completed share sale may help explain the deposit. Whether a history of equity awards can support affordability is a separate lender assessment. Neither conclusion follows automatically from the other.
Reconcile the payslip, annual pay record and stock-plan statement. The same award might appear in more than one place. Showing its gross value as pay and then adding the resulting sale proceeds as another annual earning can overstate income. Cash already spent on the deposit is no longer an available reserve.
Prepare a short schedule showing basic salary, cash bonus and share awards separately. For each relevant award, record the grant date, vesting date, units delivered, gross value, deductions, sales and net receipts. Explain gaps, unusually large awards or changes of employer rather than leaving unexplained differences.
The history and documents required depend on the lender. For example, Coutts publicly describes considering equity alongside other remuneration; this does not confirm that a particular RSU scheme is accepted, what proportion might count or that a route is available through me. Those questions need checking for your application.
Ask your employer or plan administrator about dealing restrictions, blackout periods, settlement and withdrawals. Check how leaving the role could affect outstanding awards. An expected vesting date is not a promise that sterling will reach your solicitor that day. Discuss any binding purchase commitment with your solicitor before relying on those funds.
Illustrative situation, not a client result: an employee expects an award to vest six weeks before completion. I would separate the confirmed salary from the prospective proceeds, establish the release and sale steps, and identify the funds already available. If the award is delayed, the budget and purchase timetable need reassessing.
Shares quoted in dollars may produce a different sterling amount when sold and converted. Record the transaction currency, conversion date, charges and bank receipt. Keep enough time to explain transfers between your stock-plan account, overseas bank and UK account; do not send sensitive documents through a public enquiry form.
Tax deductions and reporting depend on the scheme and your circumstances. Cross-border employment can add questions. Ask your tax adviser what should be reserved and whether withholding settles the full liability. This guide does not calculate tax or recommend selling or retaining shares; investment decisions need the appropriate advice.
Salary, bonus, investments and the intended deposit can all depend on one employer. Consider a weaker award, lower sale proceeds or a change of role together. What payment remains comfortable? Which reserves are genuinely separate from the shares? Would a smaller purchase or later completion give you more room?
A useful first conversation produces a clear list of facts to verify, not a promised loan multiple. Bring the broad remuneration breakdown, property budget and target dates. I can help organise the mortgage questions while your employer, plan administrator and tax adviser confirm the matters within their own roles.
Open each stage to understand the work involved. The sequence and timing depend on your circumstances and the lender’s assessment.
Identify the employment, scheme, currency and status of each award.
Explain how award statements, payroll and cash receipts relate without double counting.
Establish lender treatment of the specific income and deposit circumstances.
Review release, sale, transfer and purchase dependencies with the relevant professionals.
Report changes in employment, awards, values or timing before relying on the plan.
Use this checklist to see what you can already explain. You do not need a complete application file before getting in touch.

A clear explanation of the circumstances is more useful than a wealth label or a headline borrowing figure.
Potentially, but treatment varies by lender and scheme. Grant value alone does not establish acceptable income. History, conditions and evidence need individual assessment.
